Nothing insulates against the cold weather like a MAGNET T-shirt. All the guys down at the homeless shelter think so. We appreciate Manny, Carwash and Hot Doug flying the MAGNET name and all, but wish they’d subscribe or something. So here’s the contest: Inspired by news of the Folk Implosion’s cameo in the upcoming film Laurel Canyon, we’re soliciting your favorite cameos by musicians in feature films. For example, you could say Evan Dando in Reality Bites. Or Tom Petty in The Postman. Those would be fine answers. Quoting a choice line of dialogue really puts your entry over the top. An answer such as “Wilco in the Wilco documentary” is stupid and wrong. Got it? Email entries to magnet@magnetmagazine.com

INSIDE MAGNET #57 (JAN/FEB) - OUT NOW!

COVER STORY - TOM PETTY
Young turks in punk bands should have this much anti-corporate vitriol. Sadly, they’re too busy jockeying for record deals. Tom Petty already has a record deal (yeah, a corporate one), and though he sells records, he hasn’t sold out. Like the cover of the magazine says: The rebel is in.

2002: THE YEAR IN MUSIC
It isn’t over until MAGNET writes about it. (This maxim holds true for quite a few bands, as well. It’s here that we’d like to thank all the bands over the years that have broken up immediately after we’ve written about them; from That Dog and Tsunami to the Promise Ring and Shudder To Think. God bless you and all of your creative differences.) MAGNET’s review of 2002 is best described as “even-handed” and less ably described as “like dinner with your family, but with music.” There’s plenty to rehash (see our top 20 albums and 10 under-the-radar ones) and ridicule (electroclash, Ryan Adams’ ego, other music magazines). Then we bother people by phone (Beck and ex-Wilco multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett) and say mean stuff about bands we like and grew up with (Sonic Youth, GBV, Blues Explosion). Pass the shoestring potatoes.
