This e-newsletter is brought to you by the new media department at MAGNET Magazine, Inc., which replaces our aging papyrus division. Read this carefully and you’ll save yourself the hassle of reading the actual magazine - we know how much of a chore that can be [uncomfortable laugh]. But seriously folks, seeing as how VH-1’s Bands On The Run is over and nobody in their right mind would go see Planet Of The Apes twice (or once), MAGNET ain’t looking half bad as an entertainment option.

INSIDE MAGNET #51 (Sep/Oct) - IN STORES AND MAILBOXES THIS WEEK!

COVER STORY - NICK CAVE
Nick Cave is a dark legend with demons for muses. Or, if you’re not a goth, he’s just a fantastic songwriter who’s starting to fill out Leonard Cohen’s lipstick-stained peacoat. (Figuratively speaking, of course; Cave is still very thin.) MAGNET’s Jonathan Valania travels to the Roskilde Festival in the Netherlands to talk with the man who now sings softly and carries a big Bible.

FEATURES
Thom Yorke of Radiohead has the talkies. Former Dream Syndicate leader and indie-rock godfather Steve Wynn gets together with our favorite crime-fiction novelist George P. Pelecanos for a chat and a story we almost titled “Higher Love.”* Unwound celebrates 10 years of avant-punk (fun fact: Unwound originally convened under the name Johnson, Johnson And Johansen). Ben Folds comes to terms with being a suburban white guy. U.K. improvisational trio AMM learns you a thing or two about breaking musical rules.

SPECIAL FEATURE
ROCK SOLID - Contrary to what we splashed across the front cover of the last issue, rock isn’t really dead. It’s just suffering at the hands of overtattooed, no-account bands that have managed to disprove the notion that god don’t make no junk. (He do.) We’re here to help. MAGNET profiles six young American rock bands worth losing your hearing for: White Stripes, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Strokes, Burning Brides, Sights and Tight Bro’s From Way Back When.

OTHER STUFF
There are also stories about bands like Firewater, Ivy, Summer Hymns, Idlewild and the Clientele. We ask Scott Kannberg (who used to be in Pavement but now fronts a way-cool rock band called Preston School Of Industry) stupid questions. Plus more than 100 record reviews that aren’t dumbed down for people who have never heard of Built To Spill, Stereolab, Mercury Rev, Modest Mouse or Whiskeytown.

*“Higher Love” is, of course, the title of a number-one hit for Steve Winwood, which we thought was funny because of the similarity in the names. Steve Wynn, Steve Winwood - we’re not losing you here, are we? Anyway, no less than four memos were circulated around the office, all quite huffedly debating the appropriateness of this headline. This cycle of stupidity will almost certainly repeat itself next issue with Ryan Adams/Bryan Adams

NEW AT MAGNETMAGAZINE.COM (that’s our Web site, which can be found on the Internet): http://www.magnetmagazine.com

RADIO BIRDMAN: We bet a large portion of our interns’ savings that you’ll not find a more complete current overview of these seminal Aussie punks anywhere. Longtime Birdfan Fred Mills talks to Deniz Tek and Rob Younger about the band’s career and the recent Sub Pop release of The Essential Radio Birdman 1974-78.

ORANGE TWIN: This record label will finance the Elephant 6 collective’s masterplan of ecological assimilation and, eventually, world domination (not really, but it’s hard to explain). Matthew Fritch talks to Elf Power’s Laura Carter about the new imprint she runs with members of Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control, Of Montreal and the Gerbils.

Plus: record reviews, photos of your (OK, our) favorite bands, live reviews, music news and Web-only MAGNET archives of classic stories from sold-out issues.
