Film At 11: David Myles

On January 26, Juno Award winner David Myles will release 10th album Real Love (Little Tiny), though it’s only the Canadian roots rocker’s second U.S. LP. Unlike 2015’s So Far (which featured stripped-down takes on a baker’s dozen of some of Myles’ previously released songs as a way to introduce him to an American audience), the 13-track Real Love is fully electric, with contributions from his touring band and R&B singers Reeny and Mahalia Smith. Myles recently filmed a video for the title track in California with director Mat Dunlap. Says Myles of the clip, “I love dancing. Always have. I remember breaking down boxes in my basement as a kid and trying to break dance to Thriller. I’ve basically been dancing ever since, but usually in the privacy of my home, ’cause I’m not particularly gifted in that domain. For this video, however, I decided it was time to go public, no matter how ridiculous it looked. We had finished shooting the cover photo of the record and had the lights set up, and we decided to just run the tune and I’d give ‘er as hard I could, in total seriousness, for the whole tune. Like the most competitive lip-synch contest I could imagine. It was exhausting and way too much fun. It terrified my manager when she saw it, but I thought it was hilarious. We can’t let something as fun as dancing be the domain of only the well-trained, right?! I hope you dig it, and may well you dance along.” We are proud to premiere the video for “Real Love” today on magnetmagazine.com. Break out your boogie shoes (today’s the 40th anniversary of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack after all), and watch it now.
