Film At 11: Alex Dezen

On February 3, Alex Dezen will release II via the Poor Man label. Today, we’re proud to premiere the video for “Holding On To You (Holding On To Me)” on magnetmagazine.com. Watch the clip below, and read the Q&A after the jump.

What inspired you to write this song, and is there a story behind it?
Divorce is a hell of a drug. Most of this is a true story. Definitely a reflection on some darker times. But I’m better now. Mostly.

Who came up with the video-treatment idea? It’s very old-school in feel in a lot of ways. Was that your intention?
That’s all (director) Mike Dunn. He’s incredibly good at capturing a feel, and we were defiantly going for that VHS, lo-fi aesthetic. He’s a genius. I feel like he hit it right on the head. A lot of this album is a collaboration between me and Amber Bollinger, and I wanted her to be a featured character in the video. Mike came up with doing it as a kind of Krishnamurti observer-is-being-observed concept. I think it worked really well.

What do you hope listeners and viewers take away from hearing the song and watching the video?
That it takes them to a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, filled with crimped hair and fluorescence and itchy, weird feelings.
