From The Desk Of Britta Phillips: “I Hate The Internet” By Jarett Kobek

You know Britta Phillips from the bands Luna and Dean & Britta, but now she has a debut solo album, Luck Or Magic. The record features five Phillips originals alongside covers of songs by the Cars, Evie Sands, Fleetwood Mac, Dennis Wilson and ABBA’s Agnatha Fältskog. Phillips will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week.

Jarett

Phillips: Dean and I were invited to hear him do a reading at Skylight Books a few weeks ago. He said he hates readings, so he didn’t read. Instead he did a Q&A with our friend and author Matthew Specter, then took questions from the audience. He was very dry, acerbic and funny, so I bought the book. I haven’t read it yet, but Dean says its really good, so I’m starting it on Monday, only slightly reluctantly because I feel like I’ve just begun to learn how to love the internet. I have to; I have an album to promote. One of the things the author hates about the internet is the way people feud, getting so angry and feeling so great expressing their “important opinions.” I avoid that—I have an album to promote! But seriously, I try to avoid it anyway because it seems pointless and immature. It does feel good, though, so I understand the appeal, but I’m more of a peace maker than an inflamer. Sometimes, though, peace makers crack and have to let it all out. I’m not sure where, though … I guess it’s better to crap on strangers on the internet than your loved ones.
