From The Desk Of Britta Phillips: Dudes In Music

You know Britta Phillips from the bands Luna and Dean & Britta, but now she has a debut solo album, Luck Or Magic. The record features five Phillips originals alongside covers of songs by the Cars, Evie Sands, Fleetwood Mac, Dennis Wilson and ABBA’s Agnatha Fältskog. Phillips will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week.

TameImpala

Phillips: After talking about how much I’m loving female solo artists yesterday, I want to mention my favorite new (and newish) dude music. Tame Impala’s Currents is my favorite album by them/him, even though most of the guys I know complain about the lack of guitars. Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s “Multi-Love”—he’s a Kiwi! (with a fascinating-love triangle story and super cool funk-soul grooves and singing). I heard the track “God Emoji” by another Kiwi, Silicon, on the plane to N.Z. last year. A really good weird song. I had to check out Jaakko Eino Kalevi after we kept seeing his posters everywhere when Luna played Australia last year, and I really like his song “Hush Down.” I’m keeping my eyes and ears on Jacco Gardner after “Find Yourself” found itself on several of my Spotify playlists. But Deerhunter’s “Fading Frontier” probably wins for best album in my mind. Bradford Cox is a super talent. Another favorite album is Jonathan Bree’s A Little Night Music. Check out this crazy cool video for “Weird Hardcore.” Gives me chills.
