From The Desk Of Britta Phillips: Female Artists

You know Britta Phillips from the bands Luna and Dean & Britta, but now she has a debut solo album, Luck Or Magic. The record features five Phillips originals alongside covers of songs by the Cars, Evie Sands, Fleetwood Mac, Dennis Wilson and ABBA’s Agnatha Fältskog. Phillips will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week.

Christine

Phillips: I’ve been really into music by newer female artists for the past few years. I love Dusty, Nina, Nancy, Peggy and Carole, but I hadn’t really been listening to much new music in a long time, and at some point while I was making my album, I felt like I really had to start listening to more new stuff. And I found a lot to love, and a lot more by female solo artists than usual. Maybe its just a song or two that really gets me, but Cate LeBon and Jessica Pratt both made great albums. Right now I’m obsessed with the song “iT” by Christine And The Queens, which I found by Shazaming at the end of an episode of Girls. Christine—Héloïse Letissier—is a cross between Françoise Hardy and Michael Jackson. She identifies herself as pansexual, and her song is about imagining being a man. And she’s an amazing and cool dancer. It’s gorgeous and exciting. A mix of male and female is what makes for the most thrilling pop and rock ‘n’ roll. Eleanor Friedberger!! Courtney Barnett! “Secret In The Dark” by Monika is one of my favorite tracks (I say tracks, not songs, because the production is perfect) of the past year, and her voice is the perfect blend of male and female.
