From The Desk Of GospelbeacH: Kenneth Patchen

Brent Rademaker would like to think that GospelbeacH’s Pacific Surf Line is a celebration of our country’s two left coasts—though maybe he would’ve preferred a bit more Old Florida charm to counter the L.A. swagger. “I really wanted to make this album sound like the kinds of music I listened to growing up in the ’70s,” says Rademaker, a native of the Gulf Coast. By and large, though, Pacific Surf Line celebrates Rademaker’s return to Southern California. For a collective effort, the LP is surprisingly lean, with more refined nods to the Flying Burrito Brothers twang that informed Rademaker’s former group, Beachwood Sparks. GospelbeacH—Rademaker, Neal Casal, Jason Soda, Kip Boardman and Tom Sanford—isn’t afraid to broach the breezy accessibility of yacht-rock mainstays like the Eagles and Loggins & Messina, either. The band will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our new feature on them.

Sanford: As an opportunist of Dead Lines, I will humbly offer anyone to lend their interests to my admiration of (and influence from) the poet/author named Kenneth Patchen. A sample poem titled: “The Daft Little Shoe Clerk Decided It Would Be Fun Yo Go Up And See What Things Are Like Above The Sky” is, well, short and sweet.

The real deal in my opinion, however, would be a book entitled The Journal Of Albion Moonlight. When I was a mere lad of 15, this book shook it up. I became enamored of all things “Patchen.” I found it slightly annoying that Jim Morrison was hip to him or even my own father before me … I was 15. Anyhow, I shared my enthusiasm with a young girl from Westridge in Pasadena, and we both went about scouring book stores for his work. I believe she gifted me with his very first novel, See You In The Morning. Rare and out of print … so now … even then … naive and yet not unwise were we … I write this praise of Kenneth Patchen in honor of our innocence then and experience now.
