From The Desk Of GospelbeacH: “12 Monkeys” (The Movie)

Brent Rademaker would like to think that GospelbeacH’s Pacific Surf Line is a celebration of our country’s two left coasts—though maybe he would’ve preferred a bit more Old Florida charm to counter the L.A. swagger. “I really wanted to make this album sound like the kinds of music I listened to growing up in the ’70s,” says Rademaker, a native of the Gulf Coast. By and large, though, Pacific Surf Line celebrates Rademaker’s return to Southern California. For a collective effort, the LP is surprisingly lean, with more refined nods to the Flying Burrito Brothers twang that informed Rademaker’s former group, Beachwood Sparks. GospelbeacH—Rademaker, Neal Casal, Jason Soda, Kip Boardman and Tom Sanford—isn’t afraid to broach the breezy accessibility of yacht-rock mainstays like the Eagles and Loggins & Messina, either. The band will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our new feature on them.

12Monkeys

Rademaker: Why did they try to make a TV show out of 12 Monkeys? I really love that movie. I can’t tell you why; well, I could tell you, but it would take about three years to break it all down. It’s my favorite thing Bruce Willis has done since Moonlighting. Brad Pitt is good in it as well, but it’s not about the actors. I don’t even think it’s a lot to do with Terry Gilliam (director). I get the same feeling from Groundhog Day. When it comes on, I get under a blanket and watch it, and while I’m watching, I reflect on my life and usually I cry. I put Vanilla Sky in the same category; although it’s not quite as good, it gives me the same feeling. Time is precious, so maybe I shouldn’t waste it wondering why they tried to make a TV version of 12 Monkeys. Here’s a list of shows that were movies that I liked. Its a short list, as it rarely works.

Planet Of The Apes
