“Mr. Banes regrets having to withdraw his services.”

“It isn’t a matter of services being withdrawn!” Nadine said. “He isn’t the bloody gardener. He asked me to exhibit his paintings for a certain amount of time, an amount of time that begins tomorrow night with an opening that has already been advertised!”

Nadine turned the stack of promo sheets on the reception desk toward her and looked at the photo of Jeffery Banes standing rather rigidly in his Downtown Eastside studio, light streaming in from the huge windows behind him. With the full beard, aviator sunglasses and ball cap it was difficult to discern what Jeffery really looked like. On the handful of occasions she’d met with him, he’d struck Nadine as a man for whom being a political artist was not an especially good fit. Shy and self-effacing, he possessed neither the charm nor the wit useful in tough spots with critics and detractors, but being a recent graduate of the Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Nadine figured he’d have a lot of friends that would increase the number of visitors to the museum.
