From The Desk Of The BoDeans: My First Gig With The BoDeans

I Can’t Stop is the latest release from the legendary BoDeans, who started making music together more than 30 years ago. The band will be touring throughout the rest of the year, but in the meantime, frontman Kurt Neumann, multi-instrumentalist Sam Hawksley and drummer Kenny Aronoff will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week.

Hawksley: It’s a long way from Australia to Freedom, Wisc. I grew up in Australia listening to all sorts of music. Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix were my guitar heroes.I also loved songwriters; Jackson Browne and James Taylor were some of my favourites. I also loved the Band; a friend of mine turned me on to Robbie Robertson’s solo record. I always read the credits on record sleeves. That’s when I first heard about the BoDeans. There they were alongside U2, Daniel Lanois. Later on, my roommate had a bunch of BoDeans records. Then I heard “Closer To Free” on the radio and loved it. Fast forward almost 20 years; I met a fiddle player who was playing with the BoDeans and World Party. I said, “I love those bands. If they ever need a guitar player and singer … ” Two weeks later I was doing the gig. I had four days to learn the 90 minute set, plus extras. Guitar and harmonies. Kurt and I ran the set, just us in a hotel room for an hour. The next night: “Good evening, Freedom. We are the BoDeans”
