From The Desk Of The BoDeans: The Ladies In The BoDeans’ Life

I Can’t Stop is the latest release from the legendary BoDeans, who started making music together more than 30 years ago. The band will be touring throughout the rest of the year, but in the meantime, frontman Kurt Neumann, multi-instrumentalist Sam Hawksley and drummer Kenny Aronoff will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week.

Hawksley: The BoDeans on the road is strictly a boys-only affair.  Which is funny, because Kurt lives in a house with his wife and five daughters. I Can’t Stop features three female singers on background vocals—Australian born, London-based soulful powerhouse Nina Ferro on “Love Somebody,” Nashville-based, honey-voiced singer/songwriter Sutton Sorensen on “What I Believe In” and Kurt’s daughter Sophia Neumann on “Something We Found.” I’d co-written and produced an album for Nina Ferro when she came to Nashville a year earlier. She was back in Nashville, writing new songs and just happened to be around when we were tracking “Love Somebody.” I thought she’d be perfect to add some soul to the track, and she did. Sutton Sorensen was working on some demos of her songs at my studio. “What I Believe In” had lots of my vocals on it, and I thought it sounded too one-dimensional. Sutton’s voice blended great with mine and gave it life. Sophia had sang on a song of her sisters in Kurt’s studio not too long before the making of I Can’t Stop. Kurt realized how angelic and airy her voice was in that moment, and their voices just blended together wonderfully on the “oh ohs” in “Something We Found.” The female vocals add a new color to the sound of the album. Now I have to figure out how I’m going to sing their parts …
