Big Myke Destiny On The Rampage

SamAndrew

The recent death of Big Brother & The Holding Company guitarist Sam Andrew brought back a memory of happier days. Andrew, Avalon Ballroom proprietor Chet Helms (the man responsible for bringing Janis Joplin into Big Brother) and Boots Hughston (about to host music at San Francisco’s Maritime Ballroom) appeared on The Myke Destiny Big Guitar Show on KFJC, FM radio station of Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, Calif., to be interviewed by Big Myke and yours truly, about 15 years ago. It was Myke’s show (I was just the frequent guest idiot) so he had to introduce the trio every time we broke for a public-service spot. And he got the names wrong every time: “This is Big Myke Destiny with Professor Jud Cost talking with Chet Helm, Sam Andrews and Bootsy Hughston.” I would correct Myke, off-mike, but it made no difference. By the third time he’d made a pig’s ear of his intro, Andrew just rolled his eyes. Big Myke was an excellent DJ, but he had moments where you could see why X’s John Doe once referred to him as “Big Myke Density.”
