From The Desk Of The Muffs: Benny Benjamin

After a decade adrift, the Muffs have gotten their melodic pop groove back. Frontwoman Kim Shattuck has reunited with longtime backing members Ronnie Barnett (bass) and Roy McDonald (drums) for Whoop Dee Doo (Cherry Red/Burger). The Los Angeles-based trio will also be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand-new feature on the band.

McDonald: Benny Benjamin is the man most responsible for the Motown drum sound. His trademark drum fills have been copied by everyone, including me. Of course, props have to go out to fellow drummers Pistol Allen and Uriel Jones. Between the three of them (and great, great, great Motown bassist James Jamerson), they were the percussive engine behind almost all of the great Motown songs of the ’60s. But it was Benjamin who was the originator. His work on the Temptations’ “Get Ready,” The Miracles’ “Going To A Go-Go,” Stevie Wonder’s “Uptight” and countless others will never be equaled. And his influence, conscious or not, on every drummer who followed him cannot be understated.
