On the new Nina, Xiu Xiu tackles the works of jazz/blues legend Nina Simone with a collection of 11 covers infused with the band’s avant-garde fervor. The record’s first single, a rendition of “Don’t Smoke In Bed,” retains the original’s almost-acapella quality during the verses with a bit more dissonance and grief-stricken vocals courtesy of frontman Jamie Stewart.
