Best Of 2012, Guest Editors: Amanda Palmer On “King Of Hearts”

As 2012 has come to an end, we are taking a look back at some of our favorite posts of the year by our guest editors.

Amanda Palmer has been a busy lady. It’s been four years since her last record, Who Killed Amanda Palmer, and in the interim she’s been dabbling in all sorts of projects: business (you can read about her huge Kickstarter success), music (channeling her musical roots for her new album, Theatre Is Evil) and fun (adapting Neutral Milk Hotel for a high-school production). Palmer will also be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new feature on her.

Palmer: King Of Hearts is undoubtedly one of my favorite films of all time, so good I want to crawl into it, French people and all, and just die there. In Cambridge, Mass., long ago in the 1970s, it was such a popular cult film that it ran like clockwork every Friday night at the local art cinema, and people attended it like church. I warn you: it’s French. French in that way that … French is. The “French” who worship Jerry Lewis are the same “French” that made this film, if you get me. There’s some wicked slapstick French shit that just has French written all over it. However, it’s still the best circus-themed, charming, lunatics-unleashed-from-the-asylum-saving-the-world-from-war-and-senseless-hatred, absurd film ever made, and the music is amazing. I tried for years to find this soundtrack, and only with the advent of eBay did I manage to get my hands on a copy. Film-wise and music-wise, Amelie ate your heart out. This film buries you alive under a pile of charming French spoons.
