From The Desk Of Aesop Rock: Bob’s Donuts

Following a five-year hiatus, San Francisco-via-NYC hip-hop artist Aesop Rock recently returned with his first solo album since None Shall Pass. Released by the Rhymesayers label, Skelethon is the rapper’s effort to come to terms with the death of a close friend, as well as the deterioration of several friendships and close relationships. “Death has become commonplace in my life,” he says. “The past few years was an endless period of skeletons. But, hopefully, Skelethon will help put all of this behind me. It’s like a giant purging—like finishing a chapter and preparing to jump into the next one.” Aesop will also be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our recent feature on him.

Aesop: Bob’s Donuts is a magical 24-hour donut shop in San Francisco. It’s pretty simple, old school and right up my alley. Inside is a classic, charming donut shop: bar stools, coffee, TV, giant fryer and an array of homemade doughy goodness. Perhaps because I tend to keep odd hours, it’s the Bob’s cooking schedule that really pushes this place over for me. Basically at around 12 or 1 a.m., out comes the trays of raw dough to take a swim before your eyes.

Watching dough fry is pretty damn mesmerizing in itself, but eating a glazed donut 30 seconds out of the fryer on a weekday at 1 a.m. while watching Seinfeld reruns on TV really speaks to me—and I don’t even like Seinfeld that much. They keep the flavors pretty streamlined: glazed, maple, frosted, etc. The secret weapon being the buttermilk donut, which is a whole other planet of awesome.

Apple fritters are also highly recommended. Bob’s is owned by incredibly great people, and it’s a must-try if your in SF when the witching hour strikes.

Get over there.

Video after the jump.
