MP3 At 3PM: Charlie Hunter

“Blind Arthur” is the lead single from the self-released Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead. It sits on a down note, a commentary on the struggle to get ahead today in the United States. Fittingly, then, “Blind Arthur” is a standard eight-bar blues. Charlie Hunter brings his signature jazzy style to the track, making the song a smooth, meditative blues that he says was inspired by one of his favorite guitarists, Blind Blake. Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead, a Hunter collaboration with drummer Scott Amendola, comes out October 2. Download “Blind Arthur” below.

I’ve been a Charlie fan for a couple of years now and I love the way he evolves. There is so much rhythm going on in his playing and for me he is the new Joe Pass meets James Jamerson.

What an inspiration!

Charlie,

Another great interpretation of life. Have been listening to you since seeing you at Yoshis in SF some years back. Every trip back there it was a new set and experience. Still always the so totally awesome, driving style you have. You and Scott have been making great music for years. Keep up the great work. Hope to see you at the Mint in LA this year.

I love the way sometimes you are a guitar player adding in some bass flavors and sometimes you’re a bass player throwing in a little guitar. On Blind Arthur — welcome back to the low end!

Great tune- love the sound of the guitar and drums. Sounds like I’m sitting front and center at one of your shows- which has been for almost 20 years now. First time I saw you was with T.J Kirk in Chicago at the Elbo Room. Think was just after “If Four Was One” album. ’96? Can’t wait to see you this Friday!
