From The Desk Of The Spinto Band’s Joe Hobson: Hacking “Bomberman”

The members of Wilmington, Del.’s Spinto Band have been playing together since the mid-1990s, when they were still in high school. A decade and a half later finds Nick Krill (vocals/guitar), Thomas Hughes (bass/vocals), Jeffrey Hobson (drums), Sam Hughes (keyboards), Joey Hobson (guitar) perfecting pop sounds on the recent full-length, Shy Pursuit, in their newly built recording studio, scoring films, starting a record label and searching for the perfect cup of coffee. They will also be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new Q&A with Krill.

Hobson: In the downtime of recording Shy Pursuit, we liked to play Super Bomberman 2 for the Super Nintendo. It is a perfectly designed competitive four-player game, but after countless hours of playing, we wished it had a bit more variety. So I thought I might try my hand at hacking some new stuff into it. First off (and the simplest thing) was to change some graphics. I decided to take some Zelda sprites and make a Zelda-themed Bomberman. After a few months doing that, I decided to get a little more ambitious. With no prior knowledge of how to go about changing code in the game, I set forth with a hex editor, SNES debugger and the internet. Months later, I had finally figured out how to change some of the hex code to affect game play. This is one of the stranger things I have taught myself to do. If I could go and tell 10-year-old me that I could change SNES games, I would call future me crazy.

Video after the jump.
