From The Desk Of Turing Machine’s Justin Chearno: Computer Magic

The complex math rock/angular indie/krautrock mix as embarked upon by New York’s Turing Machine since 1998 came to an abruptly tragic end in November 2009. On the eighth of that month, 34-year-old drummer Gerhardt “Jerry” Fuchs was killed in a freak elevator-shaft accident in a building where he was attending a fundraiser. Understandably, surviving members Justin Chearno (guitar) and Scott DeSimon (bass) put the band to rest after losing an integral piece of their musical puzzle and close friend. So, it was to everyone’s surprise when, earlier this year, Turing Machine announced its return with a new album, What Is The Meaning Of What (Temporary Residence Ltd.). Chearno and DeSimon will also be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new feature on them.

Chearno: Danz is just so prolific it completely blows my mind. That she finishes idea after idea so quickly is very humbling to a band that has only been able to release three records containing a handful of songs in more than a decade. Her recent Orion on Kitsune gets more epic than some of her older stuff, but it still retains the feeling like you’re sneaking a look inside her world: one that I like a lot. She nails the “I’m going to make these songs for me, in my apartment and you can listen to them if you want to” vibe that I felt when I first heard “Coming On Strong” by Hot Chip. Also, the drummer on her new record (and live) is Chris Egan, who is also playing in the Turing Machine live band these days.
