From The Desk Of Rebecca Gates: “Saipua” Blog

More than 10 years have passed since Rebecca Gates put out her solo debut, Ruby Series. The former member of the Spinanes mostly shifted her energy to other projects: coordinating and managing exhibitions for museums, lecturing at arts centers, composing music for dance and film, participating in performance pieces and stylizing photos for magazines. She also did some bookkeeping, retreated to Rhode Island and helped friends build a movie theater. But as time and money allowed, she also popped back into studios to put together her follow-up, The Float (12XU). Gates will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new Q&A with her.

Gates: Working at home, often in solitude and frequently on the computer, one has to find moments to step away from the task at hand without traveling far. Sometimes it is too much of an interruption to move out of the chair. At that moment it’s a good idea to take a sip of water, sit up straight and take a quick dip into the Saipua blog. She posts musings and photos that are personal and don’t come across as brand building. Intimate reportage.

From March 28: “working outside my normal color scheme, experimenting with some stems from a new clematis grower. yes, the word clematis sounds like a venereal disease to most of us. can’t wait to see what kinds of spam comments that little figment gets me. tired tonight.”

There are farm pictures, shop shots and photos of bouquets that are exquisite. The colors are subtle, gorgeous and the arrangements composed as I would if I could, if my thumbs were not light green and my fingers not reserved for guitar chords. A little eye vacation, deep breath and back to the 0s and 1s.

(I met someone once who said she had overcome a terrible cocaine habit. One of the ways she had rewarded herself for getting clean was to spend the same amount of money she’d paid for drugs on fresh flowers. I was flabbergasted and amused, imagining an apartment bursting with blossoms, flowers pressing up against windows and sneaking out through the cracks around doors. How could it be possible to swap that expense column for the other?)

Video after the jump.
