MP3 At 3PM: Hospitality

It’s been nearly two years since Hospitality—the Brooklyn-based indie-pop group fronted by Amber Papini—showed off its ability to conjure urbanite whimsy on its self-released, self-titled debut EP. The sparse arrangements and discerning lyrics made Papini seem like the daughter conceived by Eleanor Friedberger and Stuart Murdoch while the Velvet Underground’s “After Dark” played on repeat in the background—the impossibly fanciful, cute and inspired coed you heard singing melodies to Proust through her bedroom window. “Friends Of Friends” is the first track to be heard from the group’s debut full-length album, to be released early next year on Merge Records. It seems that while the group still retains some of the minimalist touches of the EP, producer Shane Stoneback (Sleigh Bells, Vampire Weekend) has helped Hospitality comfortably expand its twee-pop with horns, synths and some crunchy, angular guitar work to liven up the proceedings. While it may not evoke the same dorm-room playfulness of what many may have come to expect from the group, the intimate and cinematic New York-ness of its sound is still being joyfully rendered in the new work. Don’t miss ’em on October 18 at the Bowery Ballroom with Wild Flag and Friedberger.
