Fountains Of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger Knows You Well: Wings’ “Wings Over America”

The great Fountains Of Wayne just issued their fifth album in a career that dates back 15 years. Sky Full Of Holes (Yep Roc) was recorded by the band—vocalist/guitarist Chris Collingwood, multi-instrumentalist Adam Schlesinger, guitarist Jody Porter and drummer Brian Young—in New York City at the studio Schlesinger co-owns, and it may be the quartet’s best effort to date. Fountains Of Wayne is currently on tour, but Collingwood and Schlesinger will also be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new Q&A with the dynamic duo.

Schlesinger: Come on, who does triple live albums anymore? Maybe in the wake of Frampton Comes Alive it seemed like the obvious commercial move at the time. I wore all six sides of Wings Over America out. I love the live “Maybe I’m Amazed.”

That live version of Maybe I’m Amazed is just a ridiculously good benchmark of why live albums can be essential, and not just a few hits with some fan hiss edited in. I look at this triple album, and Thin Lizzy’s Live & Dangerous as essential statements of how stadium bands don’t have to completely lose their teeth when they strap on their guitars in front of umpteen-thousand fans.

Remember the days when popular bands were also kinda good as well??

I’m with you, Adam. I wore out my copy as well. Even the non-Paul tracks, like Go Now and Richard Cory, were really good. And Maybe I’m Amazed live is better than the original.
