From The Desk Of Oneida’s Kid Millions: Maya Hayuk

In 2008, Oneida began the Thank Your Parents triptych with Preteen Weaponry. Since, the Brooklyn band—Kid Millions, Bobby Matador, Baby Hanoi Jane, Showtime and Barry London—has completed it with 2009’s Rated O and the new Absolute II (Jagjaguwar). The quintet is touring Europe in August and is also playing the Asbury Park, N.J.-based All Tomorrow’s Parties in October. In addition, Millions will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new Q&A with him.

Millions: Maya Hayuk’s blog hasn’t been updated since 2008. I didn’t even know she had a blog until I chose her as the subject here. But it’s still cool to check out her visit to D.C. for the 2008 inauguration. To me, Maya Hayuk lives her art: It’s about staying positive and just making stuff as often as you can. I aspire to approach that kind of work ethic. One time I ran into Maya at her studio on a Sunday. She was really hung over but still messing around with watercolors. By the way, they looked amazing. We’re supposed to do a collaboration at some point. I’m supposed to write a poem about Jerry Garcia, and she’s going to do some art. And then we’ll make a limited-edition print. Who knows … Here’s to hoping!

I’m afraid I’m not advocating enough here, but I’m so comfortable around Maya (she’s so open and fun) there’s nothing to get intimidated about. But if you see the work in the flesh, then you realize the level of talent and dedication involved here. At some point, the powers that be are going to wake up to this shit. She made a painting that’s currently hanging in Oneida’s studio. It’s called Oneida’s Hacky Sack—we had one floating around for a while. You can see the painting in this photo. She was going to create a mural in our studio once when we were on tour, but somehow the signals got crossed and we never linked up about it. In a way that’s OK, because we’re leaving our studio in October and the work would be lost.

Video after the jump.
