These United States frontman Jesse Elliot suffered a near-death experience last summer, almost drowning in Lake Michigan. The resulting emotions are what inspired the D.C./Kentucky quintet’s fourth album, What Lasts, which is out today on United Interests. Surprisingly enough, “The Great Rivers” is a rather upbeat, soulful Southern-rock tune in sharp contrast to its more melancholy lyrics. These United States is currently on a U.S. tour.
