MP3 At 3PM: Busses

Busses’ Dave Brett sings like the musical love child of James Mercer and Robert Plant, his naturally soft projections seemingly cut with a jagged sword. His complex vocal dynamic reflects the overall multi-faceted sound of his Philadelphia band. “Stationary,” from Busses’ forthcoming self-titled, self-released debut, opens with ’60s vibrations in the form of classic-rock guitar strums, Brett’s voice strong and clear above the chords, urging us to “light the way for a revolutionary,” while a slow drum beat steadily builds. As the drums cap and even out level with Brett, his band members join him in a chorus of “ooohs” reminiscent of Beach Boys harmonies and the California surf. Busses is out July 27.
