MP3 At 3PM: Mystery Jets

mysteryjets4996“Flash A Hungry Smile,” the first single from Mystery Jets‘ upcoming Serotonin (Rough Trade, out July 13), is the sound of half-drunk confidence laced with devil-may-care pop sensibility. It’s brash, blown-out fun that epitomizes rock music’s ability to transport reticent cubicle dwellers into a world of loose choices and unhindered urban release. On top of bedrock rhythm, bold, tinkering guitars and psychedelic auxiliary flourishes, Blaine Harrison sings, “If love is just a race, I never seem to come first place,” simultaneously sure of his hurt and the compulsion to drown it out in a sea of booze, friends and vintage rock emancipation. Serotonin is the U.K. band’s fourth record and was recorded by Chris Thomas, legendary producer of Roxy Music’s For Your Pleasure, the Sex Pistols’ Anarchy In The U.K., John Cale’s Paris 1919 and Pulp’s Different Class.
