“Þú Ert Sólin” (Icelandic for “You Are The Sun”) is the first single from …And They Have Escaped The Weight Of Darkness, the upcoming sophomore album from budding Scandinavian composer Ólafur Arnalds. The song opens with a quaint ambient glow, and Arnalds takes a minimal amount of time to fold in a soft, pulsating piano melody that will evolve just enough over its relatively short duration to beckon a distinct set of stirring textures. Soon, again, a lonely violin accompanies Arnald’s crawling piano, creating an elation that almost erases the song’s mournful introduction and reminds us why it’s important to listen to music deliberately. What could ignorantly be panned as elevator music becomes a small treasure with rich character, like birds outside our windows exercising their fragile singing voices that we too often fail to appreciate. …And They Have Escaped The Weight Of Darkness arrives June 8 via Erased Tapes.
