MP3 At 3PM: Doug Wamble

dougwamble3471Part toe-tappin’ good-ole’ Southern-rock jam, part hand-clappin’ soulful gospel ballad, Memphis-raised Doug Wamble’s latest single, “Bitter Angels” (off his self-titled album, out last month on E1 Music), can set the mood for a Saturday night at the bar with all your friends and inspire you to give thanks the next morning in church. With a powerful guttural vibrato, mezzo-forte piano chords, steady drum beat and soaring electric guitar, Wamble’s sound is so upbeat and infectious that it’s no wonder he’s been chosen to compose music for Ken Burns’ films and the Lincoln Center Jazz Band as well as collaborate with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson, Madeleine Peyroux and Steven Bernstein.

I was in attendance at the CD release party and this song, chosen to close the evening, brought down the house at Joe’s Pub in New York City. The entire room was awash in vibrant, dramatic and soulful sound. The audience sat in awe and silence as Wamble played through a prodigious VanHalen-esque guitar solo which Eddie himself would have surely revered as one of the great ones.

The entire album is inspired and refreshing. He changes it up a lot, which I find commands your attention from beginning to end. For enthusiasts and audiophiles alike, nothing could be better. This is what music was meant to be. It isn’t careful or calculated or watered down for the masses; it is inspired, complex, soulful and honest. Doug chose the most virtuosic musicians he knew and made incredible music with them. Everyone on the album is brilliant in their own right, which makes this one of the most dynamic and completely palpable albums in my nearly 4000 album catalog consisting of classical, opera, jazz, blues, rock, folk, bluegrass and soul. The exciting thing about this album to me, is that it could clearly be defined as the missing link, finding its home among everything else I own, across every genre, binding my collection together. Oddly, I find I’ve listened to this one album more than I have anything else in my collection since it was released one month ago.

Wamble and his entourage of musicians knocked it clear out of the park with this one! I encourage you to check out the rest of the album, and definitely try to catch him in a live show. You won’t be disappointed.

note: for a complete understanding of this musician’s exceptional ability, don’t stop with this one album – the two before this serve as an excellent primer for this masterpiece!
