Dengue Fever Says Thanks A Lot: Saladitos

dengue_feverlogoDengue Fever is anything but your average indie-rock combo. Based in Los Angeles, the exotic six-piece outfit is fronted by Chhom Nimol, who sings in her native Cambodian dialect, backed by guitarist Zac Holtzman, his brother Ethan (keyboards), Senon Williams (bass), David Ralicke (horns) and Paul Smith (drums). Some photos of the boys in the band from their three previous albums look like they’ve come from Homeland Security’s no-fly list. In reality, Dengue Fever may be the best U.S. cultural ambassadors to Southeast Asia since the glory days of jazz stars Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and John Coltrane 50 years ago. The band’s “new” album, Dengue Fever Presents Electric Cambodia (Minky), spotlights vintage performances by its favorite Cambodian artists from the late ’60s/early ’70s. Dengue Fever will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our Q&A with them.

saladitosPaul Smith: These little salty dried plums are definitely one of the stranger snacks out there. Saladitos are found in both Chinese and Mexican markets, not to mention most ice-cream trucks, and they are a token of my childhood. I used to use my whole allowance to buy four packs of these little gems, and although I no longer get an allowance, I can still eat quite a few in one sitting. Most people make crazy sour faces when attempting to eat them, which is fun to watch. I must get some kind of macho rush out of being able to power through them without the involuntary facial movements. Try them some time. I dare you.

Film At 11: Phil And The Osophers

A three-punch power play of videos from Phil And The Osophers, just for your viewing pleasure. More than just another peppy-handclaps-and-jangle group, the quartet from Brooklyn (via San Francisco) is flooding the Internet with catchy videos from new album Parallelo (Factual Fabrications). The band members delved into news reels from the ’20s, ’30s and ’40s to put together the “Propeller Jet” video. For “Wandering Soul” and “Well Being,” it was avant-garde Czech films and personal tour footage, respectively, that made the cut. Try “Propellor Jet” first just for the clever mix of peppy song and smart news action, then move on to the other two, which are after the jump.

Ethan Holtzman: When I first played the accordion, the vibrations on my chest made me tingle. It felt so powerful and connected with my emotions. I love this instrument, and it seems that there are accordion players on the streets in every country that I’ve been to.

MP3 At 3PM: The New Pornographers

newpornographers4547British Columbia supergroup the New Pornographers were one of the most notable indie-rock bands of the aughts, releasing four full-lengths to wide-renown in both the populist and high-brow music press. During the same period, the band’s most recognizable players—Carl Newman, Neko Case and Dan Bejar, in particular—were producing exceptional records through their solo endeavors, attracting as much or more acclaim as the New Pornographer brand itself. The sheer confidence it takes to write great music with this type of consistency continues to ooze out of the band on “Your Hands (Together),” our first taste of the band’s fifth LP, Together (Matador), which arrives May 4. “Your Hands” launches with a guitar-heavy fervor that only intensifies as the Pornos subtly, though powerfully, layer percussive and harmonic touches as each new refrain begins. It’s the energetic sound of a band fomenting with a seemingly endless supply of inspiration, the kind of song that shirks the anxiety of our modern times for the promise of a new decade. Download “Your Hands” below, and read our 2009 Q&A with Newman and our 2005 cover story on the New Pornographers (which landed our writer in hot water with Canadian customs officials because of the porn on his laptop).
