Minus The Bear‘s modern, driving, indie-rock sound has been steadily evolving for almost a decade. Although the Seattle band has toyed with negative space, its virtuosic guitar work (performed by former math-metal stalwart Dave Knudson), off-kilter beats and synth sequences and earnest (though snarky) lyrical delivery have defined the group’s approach since its inception. “My Time,” the first single from Minus The Bear’s upcoming OMNI (Dangerbird), confidently opens its otherwise tidy sheen to funk-esque synth and wah-wah guitar runs that expand, rather than betray, its long-refined sound. The experience leaves you stimulated without belaboring the point; the music remains fun. And if “funk-esque” worries you, it shouldn’t; the keyboard flourishes, in particular, are more reminiscent of a danceable Ratatat or Passion Pit than, say, these guys. OMNI arrives May 4.
