Film At 11: The Corner Laughers

The video for “Stonewords” features this Bay Area band cavorting in a cemetery, in full-on ghost regalia. But it’s not all Robert Smith territory here, thanks to Karla Kane’s inspired vocals (not too far from a Vivian Girls aesthetic), which add a dreamy girl-pop sheen to this tale of a friendship gone awry. Taken from the Corner Laughers‘ recent Ultraviolet Garden (out on John Wesley Harding’s Popover Corps label), “Stonewords” is just one of a series of brilliant ’60s-inspired numbers. Blessed with Camera Obscura’s gift for rainy melancholia, Kane and Co. might not be laughing, but at least they’re enjoying themselves.
