Overrated should be 4th of July.. There's no way you can write a poem on a dog biscuit..

Ceremony is their best cover ever and they know it.. they always seem to play it every D&B show.

Although i don't agree with your verbose psychological interpretations of Dean's lyrics (see Snowstorm and Sorry), i'm thrilled with the fact that you're speaking about one of my all time favorite bands!
i understand it's just one guys opinion who had to write something about something so i'm not going to get too in depth about what i agree or disagree with. again, i'm just happy to hear G500 still being talked about after all these years!
and he did include Cheese and Onions which makes me smile. funny thing about that song is that my girlfriend used to rue the moment when i got home and played endless hours of their music. but for some reason that song won her over and now she's a huge fan? funny how things work out.
thanks again for the piece and be happy i was only worked into a mild lather which easily washed off. cheers to Eric and all the Galaxie 500 fans!

Saw Dean & Britta at Formoz Festival in Taiwan 2 years ago, and they performed not only Tugboat, but Strange as well. When Dean announced to the audience "We're gonna play a Galaxie 500 song now", the place went berserk, and he was visibly surprised by the crowd's response.

Strange shoulda been on this list.

Sorry but "Flowers" should have been on the "underated" list.

unbelievable music, vocal, and guitar solo. Just leaves me in a trance.

oh yeah, and Cory:

"those old Cocteau Twins albums (man, there’s a band that could use some lip service and reexamination) "

No frigging doubt.

Superb choices. For once, I agree entirely (and I'm one of those who was prepared to get worked into a lather).

Glad you mentioned my favorite "Don't Let Our Youth Go To Waste" in a positive light.

No "Strange"? That's far and away my favorite G500 song. The collision of Wareham's blase' lyrical content ("I stood in line and ate my Twinkies / I stood in line, I had to wa-a-a-ait") with the whole band at their most dynamic is just colossal and sublime and some 20 years on, I never get tired of it. It's one of Kramer's finest moments too (who should get credit for those crisp drum sounds, the producer or the drummer?). There's something in the room for this one, a quality that makes this band special to begin with, but here is just spectacular.

Also, while G500 played a role in shoegaze, I'd say there were other bands who came earlier and who had more of an effect such as Jesus and Mary Chain's early singles (released in '84/'85), those old Cocteau Twins albums (man, there's a band that could use some lip service and reexamination) and, of course, My Bloody Valentine whose "Isn't Anything" was also released in 1988 but whose Ecstasy and Strawberry Wine EP's came out a year earlier. Shoegaze in general seems to be predominantly British (I think they even coined the term) while I always think of Galaxie 500 as distinctly American and part of the unsung era of the late 1980's American Underground, much of which can be found on the Homestead label, though certainly not exclusively.
