Phillips: “Twenty Four Hours” by Joy Division came rumbling over the sound system the other day at Urban Outfitters. Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in. In fact, the voice of Ian Curtis and Peter Hook’s mournful basslines always had a way of pulling me in. A new generation is discovering the band and the albums Closer and Unknown Pleasures, wearing the T-shirts and sharing the catharsis that I’ve always gotten out of Joy Division.
