WRENS WATCH

Wrens Watch, Aug. 31, 2009

wrenswatchWe’ve been fans of New Jersey’s finest since even before their first album came out back in 1994, so let’s just say we’re used to sitting around waiting for them to take their sweet-ass time putting out new music. (Three albums in more than 14 years makes the Wrens about as prolific as Boston, which is kind of like being as tall as Prince.) As reported in a Wrens Watch Special Report, January 9 marked a huge milestone for the guys: guitarists Charles Bissell and Greg Whelan, bassist Kevin Whelan and drummer Jerry MacDonald. They issued “Pulled Fences,” their first new (well, sort of new) song since 2003’s The Meadowlands. Perhaps motivated by finally releasing something, the band convened—not in a real studio, but in Kevin’s basement—32 weeks ago to begin work on its new album. And not only that, the Wrens recorded an actual song (which you can download for free here). When we checked in with Bissell 29 weeks ago, he took exception with our good-natured sarcasm and quickly ended the interview. After ignoring us for a while, Bissell finally gave us a progress report; it seems that while other bands get together and record, the Wrens stay apart and talk to each other on the phone. Or they do nothing at all. Or they update their Facebook pagesTwenty-four weeks ago, Bissell informed us he was “too busy” to respond to our questions, but he did promise us some exclusive Wrens mp3s in the near future. Twenty-three weeks ago, he didn’t even bother responding to our emails, prompting us to call him an unprolific Ryan Adams. That got Bissell’s attention, who 22 weeks ago apologized (profanely) and promised us an exclusive Wrens mp3 for the April 6 Wrens Watch. After not delivering, he said he’d come through the next week, but he didn’t. When Bissell ignored us again (Wrens Watch, April 20 and April 27), we speculated the Wrens were actually recording. Or maybe Bissell was just being a jerk. But then he told us 17 weeks ago he’d have a new Wrens mp3 for us. And guess what? The man finally came through. Download a demo of “Z,” which was written and performed by Kevin. We emailed Bissell numerous times to thank him for “Z” and ask him how the new record is progressing, but like we told you 15 weeks ago, he was unresponsive. He did email us a photo for 14 weeks ago, though, so we had that going for us. Which was nice. Thirteen weeks ago, we got an email from Bissell saying, “Headed to bed but might have something for you.” As reported 12 and 11 weeks ago, other than a strange email from him referencing Fat Albert, we hadn’t heard from him since. Ten weeks ago, we told you that Bissell, apparently on vacation, said he would have a new song for us “as soon as I get home on Saturday,” but he never came through. Bissell returned our emails nine weeks ago, but he didn’t send any new Wrens music. He did, however, send a truly tasteless Michael Jackson joke, and since it was actually funny enough for us to tell it to others, we gave Bissell a pass. Eight weeks ago, Bissell—on vacation yet again—emailed to say, “Maybe I can actually send a song to you after I get home Sunday.” Then guess what? He emailed us his first new Wrens demo, and like we told you seven weeks ago, it’s a really good song. Six weeks ago, Bissell emailed us to say he recorded another new demo, but he’s keeping that one for himself. He also said, “Smellmineitsucks,” whatever that means. Though we emailed Bissell repeatedly five weeks ago, we didn’t even get so much as a “Smellmineitsucks.” Four weeks ago, Bissell sent this missive: “We gonna see ballgame this summer? And I don’t mean a view of you working your pockets on a street corner.” (We think Bissell just might have a shot at a cameo in the next Judd Apatow movie, Unfunny People.) Anyway, Bissell was supposed to respond to us with his thoughts on the recent 20th anniversary of the first live show by the band that eventually came to be known as the Wrens (those guys must be old), but he didn’t. Three weeks ago, we did get an email saying he didn’t have enough free time to “justify replying to explanatory spam from MAGNET,” so maybe Bissell is a (mildly) funny person after all. This week—like two weeks ago and last week—we got nothing.

MP3 At 3PM: The Splinters

splinters52Let’s take it back to the ’60s with all-girl quartet the Splinters. Since 2008, these girls have been rocking the East Bay area with their catchy, upbeat songs and are now ready to share with the rest of the country. Though they primarily are known for their live shows, the Splinters are issuing their first seven-inch, a limited release that was hand decorated by the ladies. “Splintered Bridges” gives you a feel of their old-school pop/rock sound, which leaves you wanting more.

In The News: Bob Dylan, LCD Soundsystem, Massive Attack, The Doors, Everclear And Free MP3s

bobdylanIn what sounds like some sort of Onion-style hoax, noted Jew Bob Dylan (pictured) is releasing Christmas In The Heart (Columbia) on October 13. Bobby D’s 47th LP, Christmas includes such rockers as “Here Comes Santa Claus” and “Winter Wonderland.” Bad idea? We’ll see, but he’s donating all of the record’s U.S. royalties to Feeding America at least … Commemorating the 10th anniversary of frontman Mark Sandman’s death, Morphine’s At Your Service (Rhino/Ryko, October 6) is a two-disc collection of unreleased studio tracks, alternate takes and live performances. Sandman suffered a heart attack onstage in Italy in 1999, passing away en route to the hospital. The band’s surviving members are playing a tribute show September 27 in Cambridge, Mass. … LCD Soundsystem’s 45:33 Remixes (DFA), a collection of, well, remixes of 45:33, a 2007 one-off effort for Nike released on iTunes (and eventually on CD and vinyl), is out September 15. LCD mastermind James Murphy is recording the follow-up to 2007’s Sound Of Silver, due next year … Trip-hop duo Massive Attack unleashes its fifth LP (currently untitled) in February. If you can’t wait that long, a four-track EP, Splitting The Atom (Virgin), is out October 6. It’s the band’s first new material in three years, making the 2010 release the second. Never let it be said that MAGNET doesn’t do the math for you … From the unnecessary boxed-set department, Rhino brings you Live In New York on October 6, six discs covering four 1970 Doors shows … Speaking of unnecessary, Everclear’s In A Different Light (429, October 6) features re-recorded versions of some of the band’s “greatest hits” in addition to two new songs. Do yourself a favor: Listen to the original version of “Santa Monica” and be done with it … The title of Led Zeppelin: Good Times, Bad Times, A Visual Biography Of The Ultimate Band (Abrams) pretty much says it all. But since we need to fill this space, the book features 200 rare and, in some cases, unreleased photographs by Ralph Hulett and text by Led Zeppelin scholar Jerry Prochnicky … On September 22, They Might Be Giants continues its alternate career as kiddie crooners with Here Comes Science! (Idlewild/Disney Sound), its fifth such effort. An upcoming tour will feature kids shows followed by sets for the adults later in the day. Download “I Am A Paleontologist” .. Ever wanted to see Danzig and Of Montreal on the same bill? Right, who the hell would, but just in case, the Fun Fun Fun Fest is set for November 7-8 in Austin, Texas. The Jesus Lizard is also playing, so all is not lost … Beginning September 10 in El Paso, Texas, the Revolting Cocks will be bringing their own brand of fun fun fun on their first-ever North American headlining tour (and first road jaunt in more than 20 years), dubbed the LuBriCaTour. (See what they did there?) They’re supporting Sex-O MiXXX-O (13th Planet), a remix of their March Sex-O Olympic-O CD. Download “I’m Not Gay (Blownload Prison Remix)”

Film At 11: Rock Plaza Central

Thanks to Rock Plaza Central bassist Scott Maynard for writing a tour diary about his band’s recent tour of the U.S. and Canada for MAGNET. If you missed Rock Plaza Central this summer, catch the group on its U.S. tour with the Weakerthans in September. In the meantime, check out the video for “I Am An Excellent Steel Horse,” the lead track from 2006’s excellent Are We Not Horses.
