In The News: Robert Pollard, Grant-Lee Phillips, Lou Barlow, White Stripes, Feelies And Free MP3s

pollard43511It’s been a while, for MAGNET anyway, since we’ve updated you on what Robert Pollard (pictured) is up to, so here we go. Deep breath. A solo record, Elephant Jokes, is out September 11. Download “Symbols And Heads” and “Jimmy” October sees another outstanding Boston Spaceships LP, Zero To 99, and December brings the third edition of Guided By VoicesSuitcase. Also planned for the rest of 2009 are Licking Stamps And Drinking Shitty Coffee, a double-vinyl live Spaceships outing, and The Devil Went Home And Puked: Robert Pollard’s Rockshow, a “video collage” of career-spanning live footage and other hijinks. (Watch the trailer.) … Singer/songwriter Grant-Lee Phillips’ new effort, Little Moon (Yep Roc), is out October 13. Phillips fans will be happy to know that he considers the LP the best recording of his career. You make the call … Looking for a free Lou Barlow mp3 from his forthcoming Merge record, Goodnight Unknown? Download “Gravitate” … On September 18, the Toronto Film Festival will host the premiere of The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights, a documentary of Jack and Meg’s 2007 Canadian tour. Watch the White Stripes trailer … The latest from Athens, Ga.’s Vic Chesnutt, At The Cut (Constellation), is due September 22. The follow-up to 2007’s North Star Deserter again features Fugazi’s Guy Picciotto and members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Silver Mt. Zion. Download “Chain” … Reissues are all the rage these days, but leave it to the nerds in the Feelies to do it just a little bit differently. Bar/None is re-releasing the band’s Crazy Rhythms and The Good Earth on CD and vinyl, but since the band felt the records should stand on their own without bonus tracks, they will include cards featuring download information for the bonus cuts … In 2007, Sufjan Stevens premiered The BQE, a film-and-musical suite exploring New York City’s Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. The quite-large undertaking (36 performers, along with film footage and, we shit you not, hula hoopers) will be out on CD and DVD October 20 via Asthmatic Kitty. As per, the package also includes a booklet and a bunch of other stuff … Fountains Of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics for “Much Worse Things,” a duet performed by Stephen Colbert and Elvis Costello on A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift Of All! The most interesting tidbit about this tidbit is that Schlesinger has now been nominated for an Emmy, Oscar, Tony, Grammy and Golden Globe. And what have you accomplished, exactly?

Under The Covers With Matthew Sweet And Susanna Hoffs: Go-Go Dancing In The 1960s

sweethoff100c118The duo of Susanna Hoffs and Matthew Sweet may be the perfect assimilation of vocal chops and instrumental savvy, as shown on a pair of recent albums titled Under The Covers (Shout! Factory), with volume one re-examining big hits from the ’60s and volume two tackling the ’70s. The track record for Hoffs and Sweet speaks for itself. Hoffs’ band, the Bangles, was the only member of the hallowed Paisley Underground scene to sell more than a handful of records, cracking the national top-30 no fewer than eight times from 1986-89. Sweet’s breakthrough album was 1991’s Girlfriend, which paved the way for later power-pop classics like Altered Beast and 100{e5d2c082e45b5ce38ac2ea5f0bdedb3901cc97dfa4ea5e625fd79a7c2dc9f191} Fun. The pair plans to take an acoustic version of their Under The Covers act on the road in September, but in the meantime is guest editing magnetmagazine.com all this week. Read our Q&A with them.

go-godancersSusanna Hoffs: Go-go dancing is fun to watch and fun to do. There is a groovy vibe and beatnik spirit in these dances and a charming awkwardness to the moves, like the Jerk, the Swim, the Frug, the Watusi, the Twist and the Pony. Terri Garr and Toni Basil did some stellar go-go dancing on The T.A.M.I. Show, which was filmed at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1964 and featured musical performances by the Rolling Stones and James Brown. And who can forget the adorable Goldie Hawn in a bikini and psychedelic body paint, dancing on Laugh-In? Video of go-go dancing to the Byrds after the jump.

Film At 11: Jukebox The Ghost

When Jukebox The Ghost released its exuberant Live And Let Ghosts last April, you knew there was something wacky about the way their upbeat style encompassed both falling in love and impending doom … Something decidedly Tim Burton-esque? And then all was clear, that night at the Knitting Factory when the band covered “What’s This?” (from Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas), fusing it a little too seamlessly with a song of its own. Ben Thornewill was born to sing Jack Skellington. Witness below.

Under The Covers With Matthew Sweet And Susanna Hoffs: Cats

cats4593550

Matthew Sweet: What can I say? I love the creatures as much as I do humans! Sensitive and standoffish, wily and sweet, they remind me of someone I know … ahem … I’ve lived with cats for as long as I can remember. I felt I was sort of a protector of the indoor/outdoor cats we had when I was a kid. A cat was always welcome in my room. Once away at college, a long line of beloved indoor cats ensued. Right now, we have four cats: a pair of two-year-old silver Bengal girls (one spotted, one marbled), and a seven-year-old brother/sister pair of brown marbled Bengals. They are wonderful cats in their interactions, but a little wild, too! I see cats and can’t help but see the same simple patterns that govern humans: Love goes a long way. Peaceful vibes go a long way. A little food works wonders.

MP3 At 3PM: Himalaya

himalayacolorblock3718Brooklyn’s Himalaya has released its self-titled debut album; from it comes “Melt Away.” And melt away you will when the transient, psychedelic rock hits your ears. Himalaya jams out to a rhythm of its own with haunting tracks influenced by a mix of trippy classic rock and moody post-punk. Prepare to take a trip into outer space with the array of sounds these New Yorkers artfully form into songs.
