MP3 At 3PM: Megafaun

megafaun3550One time, at band camp ... brothers Phil and Brad Cook met Joe Westerlund, laying the foundation for what would later become the bearded trio known as Megafaun. From Durham, N.C., by way of Eau Claire, Wisc., these three were originally part of a band called DeYarmond Edison, which split in 2006. The Cooks and Westerlund went on to form Megafaun while Edison bandmate Justin Vernon pursued a solo career. (You may have heard of him as Bon Iver.) One album and an impressive 250 shows deep, Megafaun has become known for its three-part harmonies, banjo-infused drone and a penchant for improv; the band is currently on tour with Bowerbirds. "The Fade" is off of Megafaun's second album, Gather, Form & Fly (Hometapes), due July 21. "The Fade" (download): [audio:TheFade.mp3]

These guys are fucking awesome (Durham Rocks) live and deserve all of the press they can get. They are just one of a handful of unique bands from The NC Triangle making waves right now. Indie Hip Hop upstarts, Big Hell are also a band to keep up with as they are fresh in ways you could not imagine. The Red Collar are buzzing around the country representing Durham to the fullest. Pink flag, The Dry Heathens, and so on and so on.
