MP3 At 3PM: The Flying Change

flyingchange420The Flying Change is the nom de guerre for New York singer/songwriter Sam Jacobs, who is introducing an elegiac new album, Pain Is A Reliable Signal, May 19 on Scarlet Shame. Jacobs recruited a bevy of collaborators including Rob Burger (Iron & Wine) and Stan Harrison (a saxophonist who’s recorded with Radiohead). Jacobs’ lyrics reflect the anguish of years wasted in hospital wards due to his wife’s incurable neurological condition. (Sciatic nerve pain due to latent spinal birth defects, in case you’re wondering.) As gloomy as that sounds, the music is upbeat in a throaty, Sufjan Stevens sort of way. Meticulously edited, with no musical verbosity, coffee-shop hazy-landscape pop lullaby “Dirty White Coats” mingles light, folksy guitar with banjo strums, soft trumpet and violin.
