From The Desk Of Cursive’s Tim Kasher: “The Wrestler”

timlogo24b2Cursive frontman Tim Kasher continues his graphic storytelling on sixth album Mama, I’m Swollen, out this week on Saddle Creek. He keeps it blunt and lyrically entertaining on the Omaha group’s moodiest LP yet, with song themes ranging from masturbation to tales starring Pinocchio. Kasher is guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our Q&A with him.

wrestler1550bThought I’d talk about The Wrestler, for no particular reason other than it was my favorite film of last year. Truth be told, I didn’t see many of the heralded films of 2008, but I’m telling ya, I liked The Wrestler so much that I am confident I would prefer it to The Reader or Doubt. Let me be honest; I don’t even want to see The Reader. And I think I would have been more excited about Doubt, but I was privileged enough to get to see the play a few years back (it was great), and having seen the play, the film version of Doubt felt too much like one of the spoof trailers at the beginning of Tropic Thunder. (Specifically, the one where Robert Downey Jr. and Tobey Maguire are monks.) I saw Slumdog Millionare, but I was also kind of inebriated. So, no comment, other than from my significant other, who assures me I don’t need to see it again. I saw Revolutionary Road and really wanted to love it, but I don’t know … it just didn’t feel that inspired. Happy-Go-Lucky was amazing, but I’ll get to that and all things Mike Leigh a bit later this week. Back to The Wrestler: The deli scenes were the best, and the Springsteen song is his best since … since “The River,” I suppose.

totally agree. The Wrestler is one of the few movies i have seen this year that i liked better the more i thought about it and as more time passed after having seen it. it’s oddly poetic, subtle and simple. oh, and not wildly contrived…
